Competitive Comparison

If you have hired a security contractor before, or ran a bid process you were probably surprised at the wide price difference between companies. You may have noticed that some bids seemed suspiciously low and others seemed unrealistically high. The bottom line is you do not have to spend a lot to get good security service but spending too little may result in disastrous results.

To determine the best contractor for your needs, requires you to do a little research to determine exactly what you expect from your security contractor. Pricing is obviously important but should not be the only measure in your final decision. By defining your needs and wants early, you can narrow the field of companies that prove capable of executing to your standards.

The following chart are some examples of basic differences that will translate to different costs.

Discount Contractor

Rose Group Security Services, Inc.

National Contractor

Lowest cost and least management input. Often managed by individuals with little or no history of security experience. Often contractor resembles a temporary employment agency.

Moderate cost with high value. Management backgrounds consist of highly skilled, experienced professionals with dedicated and consistent private security careers.

All clients get the highest level of attention regardless of bill rate.

Extreme cost with varied levels of management involvement and individual private security experience. Often only the highest paying clients receive consistent service.

Hired on application often without basic interview. Often applicants are given 8 hour pre assignment and are working a shift that same night. Back ground never conducted because of cost and because it is not required by law.

All applicants interviewed and scrutinized for grammar, speech and professional appearance. We use a 36 point checklist for each new hire process. Full employment verification and complete background reviews are conducted.

Never drug tested for both cost control and because it is not required by law.

Every officer takes 6 panel drug test before and during employment. Employees are then regularly monitored for changes in status.

Varies although most do some form of drug testing. Often only a 4 panel test.

lowest cost uniform issued, some even make employees pay for uniform or allow them to supply their own gear without consistent uniformity.

Every officer issued the highest quality uniforms and equipment with complete uniformity. Each officer is issued sufficient quantity and appropriate gear is issued based on weather conditions. Officers are not charged for issue of uniforms. Multiple styles available. Can also be customized by client.

Varies-each one has different policies towards uniforms. All issue without charging officer.

Vague post orders if any. Never reviewed for relevance.

Custom site and post specific orders written and updated every 6 months with changes. Changed more often as conditions dictate.

Varies with each company.

No show/No Call="Okay can you come back tomorrow"? No management follow through on employee infractions.

No show/No call=Termination of employment.

   Research:

One way to understand the differences in contract security companies is by looking at the experience and lessons learned by New York State and the way they request and award contracts.

In July 2003 the Office of the New York State Comptroller published a report that paints a scary picture illustrating the serious results of underbidding a security service contract.

As a result of continued failures of these discount contractors the State has now adopted a best value approach as opposed to a lowest cost award. It is commendable to note that the State recognized their deficiencies and acted on them before they were exploited. Private sector failures may not allow for such an extensive review of contractor performance. Customer confidence, loyalty and safety are ultimately at stake and can be put at serious risk. This is a direct contradiction to the fundamentals for which you hire a contract security professional.

Similar findings are found in a report published in October of 2006 by the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General.

Why should I care if my security contractor has questionable labor practices? One answer is that your contractor's labor practices and mismanagement may put your security program at risk. That is a risk our clients never take.

Some discount security contractors sacrifice quality for price. By pricing their service below market rate they may transfer the burden of lost overhead to their employees as appears to be the example in this linked article. This is a very common business trait of inexperienced contractors. Unfortunately the result is that many unsuspecting clients who believe they are getting a "deal" are left holding the bag. Remember that if the price quoted seems too good to be true....it is. The #1 reason to hire a security contractor, like Rose Group Security, is our security experience and management skill.
